Black Olympians in London

Hey the Summer Olympics are coming up soon! That’s right, the interesting Olympics! (does anyone watch the winter one?) I was reminded of this by my July issue of Essence Magazine. They listed some awesome athletes that are going to take London-town by storm. Here are some photos for a few of them.

 Brittney Reese:

This 25 year old is from California and has already competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She’s recently broken Jackie Joyner-Kersee’s indoor long jump record.

Gabrielle Douglass

This pint-sized 16-year-old packs a punch. She is so dedicated to her craft that she left her home on Virginia to live and train in Iowa under Shawn Johnson’s former coach. Look for her to compete in Balance Beam, Uneven Bars and Vault.

Maya Moore

This Missouri native will help represent the US Women’s Basketball team. She currently plays for the Minnesota Lynx team in the WNBA. She’s 6 feet tall. Okay, that wouldn’t make me feel too short, but I know this lady could run circles around me. . .

Michelle Carter

Shot put is the event for this 26-year-old. I didn’t even know that women participated in Shot put! Perhaps my mind is stuck in ancient Greece where women weren’t allow to participate at all. Her personal best? 18.85 meters! Can you imagine tossing a 9lb ball that far?!
Queen Underwood
This is an exciting time for Women’s Boxing! Apparently, including women’s boxing will be a first in Olympic history and Queen has a chance to bring home the gold for the USA. Right now, she is ranked 4th in the world. That’s nothing to sniff at! I don’t normally watch boxing, but I might just stay tuned for this event.
