This is Eartha Kitt in 1952. The photographer was Gordon Parks, a famous black photographer and director (he directed Shaft). But before I read the caption of this photo, I was completely enthralled by this woman. I didn’t know it was Kitt, former Catwoman of the Batman series, I just thought it was a beautiful young lady riding her bike.
There’s something so carefree and happy about this image that probably contrasts sharply with the political climate of her day. It’s my hope that a young woman that beautiful and free spirited could have ridden the streets and sidewalks, on her bike, without any verbal harassment or drama. I’d like to think that it was a clear and sunny day in Brooklyn and this young lady was on her way to a soda shop to meet a group of girlfriends. I don’t know for sure, but she seems like she’s having a fantastic day.
