I was inspired to give myself a mini-twist after reading Evelyn’s piece about hers. Last night, with a bottle of red wine and while watching Real Housewives of Atlanta, I did it. It took me a good three hours and two glasses of wine.
First, I washed and conditioned my hair because I knew I didn’t want to wash them too much later. I would like to keep these mini-twists a style for at least two or three weeks. Ev will tell you how difficult that is, but that’s my goal.
One thing that I find helpful is microwaving my tub of raw shea butter until it’s liquid form. If you try this for mini twists you’ll have to microwave your tub a few time during your twisting session. It solidifies quicker than you think. But that’s a good thing when you’re trying to secure twists. It seals your hair together for a long time once the butter has solidified!
So when I was done, I was satisfied the results. It was rather high on the Cuteness Scale. But I was headed to bed soon and my mood deflated a little. Because, whenever I sleep on fresh “buttered” twists, they flatten to my head and lose their shape by the time I wake up the next morning. Then I have to jump-start them back to life by wetting my hair in the shower. When they get wet, they UNRAVEL! It’s an annoying cycle or re-twisting and sleeping that allows my twist to only last for four days, max.
My ah-hah moment happened while I was watching 30 Rock and Liz Lemon was wearing huge curlers in her hair. I said to myself: “Lemon, you’re a genius!” I ran to my bathroom to find a bag of sponge rollers under the sink. I started rolling small groups of twists up with the larger sized rollers. So I could sleep as heavy as I wanted without worrying about my twist flattening to my head like a weird helmet.
This morning, I woke up with the awesome feeling that I wouldn’t have to wash my hair today. I undid the rollers and my twists fell where they felt like falling. I didn’t have flat hair! Ha HA! Take that! I made Noah listen to my new theory and he at least sounded like he cared. So now I’m telling you, if you want your mini twist to have some new body, give them sponge rollers for the night!
