Natural Dyes

Hola! My daughter has taken an interest in playdough so I decided to make her some for home. It is super easy to make, I used this recipe. I figured since I was making a natural, edible, non-toxic playdough I might as well use natural dyes as well. I juiced a small portion of a carrot and a small bunch of spinach to make green and orange food coloring (pic above). I kneaded the playdough into two balls and made a small hole in the center of each. I then used one of my daughter’s medicine syringes to place a few drops of color into each hole. I kneaded the dough for a few minutes to distribute the color and voila!
As you can see, the colors are not quite as deep as the store bought playdough, but there is a noticeable color. The whole process took less than 20 minutes. You can also use beet juice for red coloring and purple cabbage for purple coloring. You can dye clothing with natural dyes as well (lemon juice produces a nice yellow color on clothing). We’re going to have so much fun with this playdough!
