Safe Moisturizers?

Allergy season is still bothering my husband and I. We spent most of the morning sneezing and blowing our noses before we could start the day. When I did start my day, I took a shower, washing my face then moisturizing it with this stuff.

Ambi Even and Clear Daily Moisturizer SPF 30

Can I say that it burned the hell out of my face? I rubbed it into the skin around my allergy inflamed eyes and nose and it hurt! I suspected it was because I had been irritating those areas with tissue all morning, but I remember the other times I’ve used this product, feeling the same, to a lesser degree.

Then your girl started sleuthing. In my last post Is Blue Magic Really the Ticket? I wondered what the deal was with petroleum products and it led me to this website that breaks down thousands of cosmetics, revealing what their ingredients really do.

EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database
has the low down on all those down low products with suspect ingredients. I typed in the Ambi Even and Clear Daily Moisturizer and got some pretty startling info:

  • Suspect testing practices, meaning this company is not certified by PETA or Leaping Bunny and could possibly test products on animals. I don’t want to picture cages of bunnies that are cousins to my little Dobbie being tested on. Do you?
  •  Strong evidence of neurotoxicity in humans because of Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate: a non aqueous anticaking agent.
  • What is fragrance? A non disclosed mixture of scent chemicals that cause allergies and immunotoxicities. Maybe that was the burn I felt?
  • The active sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone is said to be responsible for human photoallergenic toxicity. It’s banned in Japan.

Read all of this information for yourself. While there are difficult scientific words to dig through, keep at it. It’s evident that cosmetic companies don’t expect you to do the research. The ingredients I listed above, are in hundreds of products in our bathrooms. Some of these ingredients are banned in other countries and under review in others.

So now I’m kind of in a pickle. I need to find another way to moisturize my face without these ingredients, any ideas? If you have a completely natural face moisturizer recipe or know of an organic product, drop us a line below. I’m really reconsidering most of the products I use on my body, not just my hair. I know I will be looking them up on this website before I buy them!

  2. Good call, Maggi! I think it's time to take a trip to the Natural food store.
