Hi y’all! It’s your girl Charish! I know it’s been a while since you’ve heard from both Evelyn and I but we’re still bloggin’, never you worry! Remember I was talking about Halloween costumes a few weeks back? I clued you in to one of my costume options and told you the other was under wraps.
Well now I can reveal what my friends Ricia Chansky, Lily Anderson and I are up to. During a warm summer night, while we were drinking around a fire pit in Lily’s backyard, we came up with a phenomenal idea for this Halloween. We called ourselves the FABUGirls (mind you, we’d had a lot to drink, but that doesn’t mean this isn’t a killer idea) and declared one Halloween Project to rule them all.
We want women and men all over the world to dress up as one figure in history. This year is Frida Kahlo (July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954). That’s right, men can participate too! In Frida’s case, having a mustache might be to your advantage.
So what I want you to do is google a photo or painting of this talented Mexican painter and dress up like her. Here’s a picture of her:
Kahlo was best known for her self-portraits, which you could spend hours perusing on-line. Her use of vivid colors and surreal folk imagery make her such a well-known figure in the art community. Plus, I think we FABUgirls love her so much because of her ardent feminism. You may not know this, but the art world is a man’s world where women are used as subjects but not hailed for their own talent. Kahlo challenged this in a big way by being a revolutionary inside and out of the studio.
Visit our website and you’ll find an overview of our goals:
- Take a picture of yourself dressed as Frida Kahlo, Deigo Rivera (her husband and also a Mexican artist, or Leon Trotsky (Russian Marxist revolutionary that Frida and Diego sheltered)
- Email it to us at email@example.com along with a $5 donation. October is not only a time to celebrate Halloween but it’s also Breast Cancer Awareness month. Your donations will go towards a suitable charity of our choosing.
- We will choose the one who created the most bang up, bitchin’ representation of our assignment and they will win a cool prize
We have a feeling this year’s Halloween Project will be really fun. We trust that you’ll give us suggestions as to what famous woman we’ll choose for next year. If you have any questions, please post below in the comments or go to the website and leave us a comment there:
